Bayview's Summer Programming is a transformative program where youth build the skills to become independent, confident young adults.
Summer Study
The Elementary Summer program prevents summer learning loss and fosters social-emotional growth. Each morning, certified MMSD teachers lead math and literacy instruction. In the afternoons, elementary youth eat a free, fresh lunch, play hard, dive into STEAM activities, and head out on field trips.
Bayview Youth Leaders in Training
Middle schoolers spend their summer in a specialized internship where they build employment skills and independence through team-based work. The 16 middle school interns are responsible for nurturing the organic community gardens at Bayview and at UnityPoint Health Meriter across the street. The work is team-oriented, but the growth is personalized. Each intern sets their own goals at the start of the summer and works with a coach to reach them, all while growing food for their neighbors.
Youth Employment
The high school summer program sharpens advanced employment skills, deepens independence, and builds confidence. High schoolers intern throughout the community center, where mentors guide them through specific projects and assignments. This is a first job where high school students stretch their capacity in a safe and supportive community while earning wages that affirm their contributions and impact.
Impact
Bayview summer is the launching point for a successful school year. 85% of elementary participants show positive academic growth, and 80% build stronger cooperative and pro-social skills with peers. Throughout the summer, teens earn their Employability Skills and Leadership Certificates. Bayview's teen interns also emerge as community leaders. Many teens go on to facilitate workshops and share their experiences throughout Madison.
