The Wisconsin State Journal sees its potential as “one of the coolest places to live” in Madison. WHEDA’s Assistant Deputy Secretary called it a “model” for how safe, affordable housing and services can be provided. And Dane County Executive Joe Parisi noted that it shows development can be “done with communities as opposed to something done to them.”

That’s Bayview which has been providing safe, affordable housing and a broad array of services to a diverse population of individuals, families, children and seniors for 50 years. Located in the triangle created by West Washington, Regent, and South Park Streets in the heart of Madison’s downtown, Bayview is currently raising a final $4,000,000 to complete an ambitious $50,000,000 redevelopment of its site.

“We are very close, but we are not done yet,” said Capital Fundraising Campaign Chair Natalie Erdman. “I am excited to lead the Campaign to raise the final funds needed to complete the community center, gardens, and outdoor gathering spaces.”

Bayview’s redevelopment includes new housing, now under construction. Sustainability features to lower utility bills, reduce emissions, and enhance indoor air quality are part of all the new buildings including the Community Center, slated to open in 2023.

“The improvements we are making will ensure Bayview is as strong years from now as we are today,” said Alexis London, Executive Director of the Bayview Foundation “We’ll be able to double the number of people we serve, initiate new programs, and expand our reach.”

Bayview’s board and residents started envisioning the redevelopment five years ago. “Equity and inclusion are part of everything we do at Bayview,” noted Board Chair Mary Berryman Agard. “The voices of residents were at the center of our planning process which focused on understanding and incorporating the needs, values and desires of the people who live here.”

“Bayview’s model works,” London said. “The combination of safe, affordable housing and vital services helps end intergenerational poverty, ensures children succeed in school, enables seniors to age in place, contributes to a stronger economy and helps create a more equitable Madison. We cannot wait to see what the future holds!”
